Materials: Provided (adhesive tape, polycarbonate board, colour gels).

Learning Outcome:
  1. How to make your own speedlight modifiers.
  2. Using colour gels.
  3. Practical session.
What to bring?
  1. DSLR and any type of lenses. Preferably for this lesson, a 50mm lens.
  2. Your own speedlight(s).
  3. Craft knife (a cutting blade) to cut paper.
  4. A long ruler, 30cm in length, preferably metal ruler. We will use the ruler to measure and use it as a cutting guide.

This is a continuation of my Simple Food Photography Workshop for 2014.

We've got some new updated techniques with more new tips for this workshop. These techniques were tested and proven on my past years assignments for both commercial and editorial work. You're gonna love it!

Brief.
If you're curious on how food photography works, this workshop is for you. With proper simple techniques taught in this workshop, you'll be able to shoot better food photos instantly after attending this workshop.

At the end of the day, you'll gain confidence to go out and shoot beautiful food photography and also sell your services. This is a fully hands-on workshop, which means you'll each will be shooting food 1-on-1.

Small Class.

  1. To ensure focused attention, I can only take 5 persons maximum for this workshop.
  2. You all get to shoot each dishes individually for your portfolio.

Prerequisite.

  • You need to at least know how to use your DLSR and understand basic exposure relationship between shutter, aperture and ISO.
  • Other than that, you're all set!

It's 4-solid hours from 8.00pm till midnight 12.00am. You can come straight from work, and get back home in bed, ready for your next day. It's just a fraction of your time, and a lot to gain.

Hands-on Studio Lighting.
Since it's night time, it only makes sense to learn something in a controlled environment. Let's all spend some solid 4-hours to gain something for our knowledge.

"Hands-on" means that you get to shoot, measure light, set the light and learn actual studio lighting technique. This basic experience would be valuable for you in terms of building your confidence in shooting your own assignments and also opening up some doors to assist other established photographers and learn from them.

Basic Expectations.
Here are some things can expect to learn in 4-hours.

  1. How to identify and anticipate difficult subjects.
  2. How to light difficult subjects.
  3. How to pose difficult subjects.

Summary.
In short, when you walk out of our studio door, I want to make sure you walk away empowered with these skills, which are your basic survival skills in mastering studio lighting.
  1. You will have to confidence to shoot any human subjects in a studio environment.

  1. To ensure focused attention, I can only take 10 persons for this night class. 
  2. You'll NOT become Joe McNally overnight in 4-hours, but I can assure you that you'll feel less intimidated with studio lights.

Established photographers are looking for assistants that are reliable, dependable, knows what to do, and how to work around a studio environment.

Basic Expectations.
Here are some things can expect to learn in 4-hours.

  1. What the is a light meter/flash meter?
  2. Light  meters are expensive. How can I measure light without a light meter?
  3. Where do I position my lights?
  4. I'm a newbie and I don't have four lights... How do I light with just one light?
  5. How do I get that glossy white floor finish?

Summary.
In short, when you walk out of our studio door, I want to make sure you walk away empowered with these skills, which are your basic survival skills in mastering studio lighting.
  1. You'll know how to measure light, and set exposure without a flash meter.
  2. You'll know basic studio etiquette, so that when you rent a studio, the studio owner's gonna keep you in his/her good books (which may get you some discounts, just maybe).
  3. You'll know how to light with one or more lights.
  4. You'll know how to manipulate simple light to create various background tones.
